There are so many fun things to do in Southern California during the summer. No matter what your and your family’s interests are, there’s plenty of fun to be had. Here are just a few ways that you can keep your kids happy in SoCal this summer:

  1. Pan for gold at the Autry National Center.
Just a few minutes from the Griffith Observatory is the Autry National Center, a museum that takes a look at the history of the American West. In addition to different exhibits and events, you can also bring the kids to pan for gold just like the 49ers during the California gold rush. This is sure to be a fun and unique experience that your children won’t soon forget!

This event takes place every Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Entry is included with museum admission, and no reservations are necessary. Learn more here: https://theautry.org/events/family-activities/pan-gold-0

  2. Explore the King Tut exhibit at California Science Center.
Yet another unique museum opportunity that’s fun for the whole family. California Science Center is holding a KING TUT: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh exhibit to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his tomb discovery.

The exhibition runs from March 24, 2018, to January 6, 2019. It will feature many different items King Tut used throughout his life as well as a variety of 3D visuals, digital content, and an audio-guided tour. For more information, visit: http://kingtutexhibition.com/

  3. Check out the Los Angeles Zoo.
If the kids are interested in animals, there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than taking a walk around the Los Angeles Zoo. The zoo features animals from around the world and a beautiful botanical garden. Its large campus (133 acres) means that it doesn’t often feel crowded even on a busy day.
In addition to the zoo’s typical sights, shows, and activities, many kid-friendly events take place at the zoo throughout the year. Visit https://www.lazoo.org/ to find out which events are going on this summer.
  4. Take a U-Pick Melon Tour at Tanaka Farms.
From June 1 to August 31, you can take a guided wagon ride around Tanaka Farms. The wagon stops at different areas of the farm where you and the family can try different summer fruits and vegetables. The final destination is the melon patch, where you and the kids can sample home-grown melons and even take one home.

Reservations are required during the week, and tours run every hour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the weekends, no reservation is necessary. The price is $18 per person with children under 2 years free. To learn more, visit: http://www.tanakafarms.com/watermelon-tours/
